Your online guide to natural hemorrhoids relief:  learn the basics before you buy

Before you choose a particular product or treatment, it makes sense to learn a little about the problem- hemorrhoids.  We'll briefly cover what hemorrhoids are, what causes them, and how to treat them.

What exactly are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, also called piles, are the network of veins around the anus area.  The condition know as hemorrhoids occurs when these veins enlarge and distend usually caused by straining or pressure.

The two types of hemorrhoids are internal and external.  Internal hemorrhoids usually do not cause much pain and rarely itch.  External hemorrhoids are the type that tends to cause burning, itching, and/or pain.

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

There are several symptoms that usually indicate some type of hemorrhoid condition.  These include blood in the stool, in the toilet, or on bath tissue after using the bathroom, or a vague pain in the anus after defecating.  Also, itching, burning, or pain in the region may indicate a case of hemorrhoids.

What causes hemorrhoids?

Research has shown a number of factors can lead to varying forms of hemorrhoids.  These include:

bulletconstant sitting
bulletconstipation
bulletdiarrhea
bulletobesity
bulletchildbirth
bulletheavy lifting
bulletsevere coughing
bulletstraining with bowel movements
bullethereditary

Basically, any increase in the pressure in the veins around that area can lead to hemorrhoids.

Diagnosis

Most cases of hemorrhoids can be diagnosed and treated by the individual experiencing the discomfort.  The exception to this is if there is bleeding from the anus, which may indicate a larger, more serious problem.  If this is the case, a doctor will observe the area using one or more medical devices.  These can include a anoscope, proctoscope, and/ or performing a sigmoidoscopy.

Prognosis

The prognosis for most cases of hemorrhoids is very good.  Most cases are eliminated within 1-2 weeks.  There are a number of over-the-counter medications that can reduce the symptoms of hemorrhoids.  A change in diet and lifestyle will also often lead to a reduction in hemorrhoid symptoms.
